The new season of WSC meeting got off to an enjoyable and educational flyer….

    By admin | September 17, 2005

Our club President Suzanne welcomed 23 speakers (ranging from experienced to brand new) from the Chair for the first meeting of a year at the William Morris Rooms, The Broadway, Wimbledon, on Wednesday 14 September.

Here’s a quick list of the highlights of the summer for club members that got us into a public speaking mood (and an icebreaker to show what a varied lot we are): Cricket Celebrations, Helsinki, polo matches, The London Eye, Rye, New job/job under control/into the swing of it etc., The Proms, Coldplay at Crystal Palace, the desert in Dubai, thunder and lightning, Cork, gaining a pilot’s licence, Turkey, China and a Dancing Holiday.

Instead of the usual two minute topics in the first half, one of the most experienced speakers Sally provided inspirational ideas on Inspiration - or how to decide on a subject for a speech.

The second half of the evening, as is usual, was replete with thought provoking and entertaining set speeches - performed according to the ASC manual.

Firstly, Godwin gave a 7 minute level 3 speech (on construction) entitled ‘The Child Self’ in which he asked us to enter into a fantasy. He challenged us in a particularly moving way to ‘imagine meeting the child you once were’. ‘What’ he asked ‘would you say to that child and what would that child say to you?’.

Pam, for a level 4 (use of gestures) talked on the tangible. Being ‘Tactile to textiles’ means touch is very important Pam. She described the feeling evoked for her by touching a variety of surfaces - from fruits to babies to rocks, as well as materials.

So don’t be surprised to find that, just sometimes, Pam’s hands may linger..

Indeed, these eagerly received speeches left plenty in mind for the next WSC meeting in two weeks time.Tim
