WSC Meeting - Wednesday 11 January
By admin | January 17, 2006
Helen's first speech, previewed as possibly semi autodidactic by Michael from the chair - was on the subject of 'my first speech'.
Preparing for a speech for the following year seemed easy but not as the new year began. However, helped by cognitive behavioural therapy, tape recording rehersals, and comments from family Helen accomplised a fine pass on the night.
Catherine then sprinkled her 'gold dust' in an educational slot on how to evaluate a speech - topical as the meeting features the evaluation contest.
Evaluation, she explained, is the most selfless task performed by speakers for other speakers and, done well, can have an enormous impact.
Issues involved in giving a good evaluation include:
- Tact and diplomacy - no personal or character references.
- PIP.?
- Qualify everything - explain and give examples.
- Don[base ']t engage directly with the speaker - use the third person.
- Recommend the speaker to move to the next level or repeat the assignment.
'Above all, evaluation is an exercise in the art of listening.'
